Big Fish Audio presents: Sequence Beat Production Plug-in

The Soft ware Soft sampler Soft sequencer is Hard to beat at this price.

Big Fish Audio, the top dogs in sample libraries have been known to drop soft-sampler instrument products from time to time. Their newest heavyweight is an NI Kontakt player-powered sequencer called….Sequencer.

“Sequence is another ‘secret weapon’ that adds a sonic palette to your arsenal and brings any producer’s sound into a contemporary context.”

Getting up to speed consists of two download packages. The Installer (~1.1 GB zip) and the Library (~766 MB zip). We updated to the most recent version of Kontakt.

and then registered the library. New to me was Native Access, the preferred method of managing your Native Instrument products. I was very comfortable with their Service Center and interestingly enough, you’ll still need to keep the S.C. handy for legacy products.

Native Access

Since the time of the super-producer passed, more has been required of the beatsmith. No longer is the signature sound of a producer the ultimate determining factor of a rapper’s trajectory. Versatility is now key as the digital musician needs more sounds and styles at his fingertips. You are tasked with creating, cloning, crafting and commanding a kaleidoscope of compositions. Let’s face it. Sequence is another ‘secret weapon’ that adds a sonic palette to your arsenal and brings any producer’s sound into a contemporary context. In an average set of hands, you will have all the tools available to nail the most popular styles in today’s commercial spectrum. In the hands of a creative talent, Big Fish Audio’s Sequence is poised to usher in a new tool to facilitate the translation of your imagination into a…

Enough with the flowery talk.

Big-Fish-Audio-Sequence-mixer

The pros are the interface and stability  provided by the Native instruments Kontakt host and the sound design and sculpting potential of Sequence’s sonic engine. The con is the closed system that makes sample/sound import impossible. The promise is more and extended life from future expansion libraries. The plus is the price ($99.00 USD) and ease of use. The negative is ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’. The sonic imprint has taken a few turns in recent years and any producer who hopes to remain relevant needs tools like these. You can’t always remix your ear, but you can add new tools to your studio for additional sonic variety. This is one of those purchases. Enjoy.

Deconstructing the Construction Kit – Samples for music or sample-based music?

February 1, 2013 Leave a comment

Look and Listen! More lunacy with Loops

BFA Hands on Fantom

We have two articles on this subject already, but new questions about using royalty-free samples in the production system have come about. And so, how many samples may you sample before your song is no longer a song, but instead a series of samples? And more importantly, why does any of this matter?

Well this whole idea is personal and totally subjective. There is a reason each individual makes their own bar for considering when their art is their own.
I don’t walk down the purist path because there is always someone more PURE than you. And if you believe more pure is better than objectively, factually someone will ALWAYS be better than you. Even if their output is horrible by your own standards. It’s putting the Process before the Product.

For drums….we can create a line of thought that gets ridiculous but makes logical sense.
Guy A uses a step sequencer loaded with samples to make his drum pattern.
Guy B says A is not as good because he uses drum pads and really finger drums.
Guy C says B is not as good because his electronic drum set is more real playing than cheating with pads.
Guy D says C is not as good because he plays a real acoustic drum set.
Guy E says D is not as good because he samples real world noises and natural sounds and is more original than using something as limited and boring as a drum set.

Guy A loads D’s samples and creates a drum pattern…and somehow he’s the fake-est for doing so.

BFA Drive

Think of all the reasons for NOT using construction kits/samples/presets/templates etc……

1. Someday someone might use the same sound.
2. Someday someone might recreate my song on youtube and make it look easy.
3. Someday someone might sampleID one of my tracks
4. Someday someone might have a beat/track/song that sounds like mine.

And now deal with the reality that ALL of these are based on FEAR.
Afraid of how someone who is meaningless to you will think about you and your art.
This is a self-esteem issue when you only have imaginary confidence -based on what you think *might* happen in the future over your music.
As opposed to dealing with the reality of whether or not it’s WORKING FOR YOU.

Make music for money, hope it makes you rich.
Make music for fun, hope you’re having fun doing so.
Make music for no other reason than you are driven to do so, then I hope enough of the two previous reasons happen to sustain your desires.

BFA hands on controller

This (PURITY) is IMPORTANT as an INDIVIDUAL CHOICE is- it may well decide how far and how seriously you take your music.
If you INVEST yourself heavily (Money, Emotion, Time, and Effort) in your music, you are more likely to take your ambition to an end result.
Not saying the end will make you rich, famous, popular but it’s harder to walk away from something you care about.
And if your music is YOU, then you will care enough to do something with it.

Anyone can noodle, move some sounds around…press some buttons, slap some keys…
Mixdown, limiter, upload and post on a profile/forum.

Anyone can tear down that process. Criticize, belittle, analyze it…
What they can’t discredit is the effect and impact your music has on others.
That’s the part that isn’t subjective and determined by a peers opinion.

If you can accept that idea then you will realize the importance of picking a creative workflow and ethic that TOUCHES YOU FIRST so that you are inspired, no – DRIVEN to give your music a chance to touch others.

Halloween 2012 FREE TREATS and LESS Tricks!

October 29, 2012 Leave a comment

There is one day a year where it is acceptable to knock on a stranger’s door and ask for a treat. A lot of us, in and around the music industry, tend to feel and act like every day is Halloween. We wear the costume of someone serious and expect doors to be opened and our grandest aspirations advanced just because we knocked really loud.

I’ve come across many producers and beat-smiths who feel their work is done because a particular A&R has their music. They say things like they are in or it’s a done deal. I ask why? They reply something along the lines of my beats is dope. I say: yes, but why are you getting the exclusive shot? Is it possible he’s heard a lot of dope beats? Is it possible, you are not the only choice for submissions? How good an A&R can he be if YOU are the ONLY music he has to shop?

We say to artists all the time – it takes more than talent, or better yet, it takes EVERYTHING but talent. Don’t expect your ‘relationships’ to give up their contacts or pass you along or give you your big break until you’ve earned their trust or understand that they won’t help you until it helps them more.

Two sides of the Bag

What works? As a person who’s done his fair share of trick or treating I have to say some approaches work better than others. The houses that had no candy or crappy stuff got egged. The people with the quality treats got revisited -sometimes with us wearing new costumes. As a creative, that’s your goal- to keep showing up with new and engaging looks and showing your ability to arrive prepared.

If your goal is to be solicited as a business, then it makes sense to have your house in order and be able to deliver on the promises you make. Smoke and mirrors has always been a part of the game, but we are looking to create a career, not a hustle. In reverse, as a content provider, it is in your best interest to position yourself to receive long work, not luck up on a big break. Put in work if you want those doors to open.  Have a happy and safe Halloween. This blog post is sponsored by Big Fish Audio. I’ve been using their libraries for a while now and thought I’d share a one in particular that got our attention in the office.
